mIRC IRC Tutorial |
|
Every Member Should Follow Through This Tutorial, or Know How to get on irc://irc.dynamix.com/VA

IRC Audio pronunciation of "IRC" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (är-s)
n.
An international computer network of Internet servers, using its own protocol through which individual users can hold real-time online conversations. |
Get a Client
First and foremost, you need an IRC client. Dharma uses ChatZilla, which is an extention to Mozilla Firefox. I use mIRC v6.17. This guide will be for mIRC v6.17, which is a stand alone shareware client. If I get
motivated,
I may write another guide for ChatZilla, but it most likely won't be needed.
Download mIRC v6.17
Install
Run the .exe, insall, and open mIRC.
How to Get on a Server
When you first open mIRC, you will have a box that looks like this:
Enter in your own information, but never, ever ever ever give out your real name and real email address. Fill out the form. Next, click on the sun looking icon, which should bring you to a server form.
Create a new server called Dynamix, the server VA and all other T:V teams use.
Once that is entered, hit "connect to server". A MOTD command, or Message Of The Day will be displayed in the dyanmix server window. You are now connected to the server.
How to Get on a Channel
For VA, our channel is #VA. Simply type in VA
You now are in the VA chat room.
How to Register with NickServ
You should now have a window that looks like this.
On the right there are names or users. Some users will have symbols next to their name.
@=Operator / 'op' - Equivilent to an Administrator
%=Half Operator / 'half-op' - Equivilent to a Moderator
+=Voiced - Equivilent to a Member
No symbol means you don't have any extra privileges for the channel.
In order to become voiced or recognized by the server, you must register your nickname. To register, enter the following code. Replace 'password' with the password you wish to register and your email which needs to be legit so you can receive a confirmation code.
| |
| |
/msg NickServ REGISTER password email |
You should now be reigstered with NickServ. In order to log to be recognized, enter this into a channel box. I suggest moving to a different channel with no one in it, such as #124915 in case you screw up, so no one knows your password.
| |
| |
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY password |
As usual, change 'password' with your unique password.
How to Use Favorites
Click on the VA channel so the chatbox is showing. Then, go to favorites, add to favorites.
An Add Channel box should come up. Enter the following information.
You do not have to have the 'Join on Connect' or 'Minimize on Join' boxes checked, but if they are checked, whenver mIRC is opened, the network and channel will automatically open. It's a nice feature.
How To Auto-Idenify
Download this mIRC script to Auto Identify
http://www.mircscripts.com/cgi-bin/file.php?id=670
Click on the furthest left tab that says "Dynamix" on it. You will get a large window with the MOTD in it. Right click and select Auto ID.
Enter your registered nickname and password. If you wish, check the box 'Auto ID on Connect'. This way you don't have to manually type in /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password everytime you get on IRC.
Press OK.
And that's all of the basics you really need to know for IRC. The biggest tip I can give a newbie is never, ever ever auto accept a file. Even if you know who it is, be cautious.
Other teams are on irc.dynamix.com as well, including:
- #osis
- 21g
- resurrection
- rd
- nXa
- And many more...
Here's an awesome site to learn basics and past the basics of IRC.

I may update this later with more advanced options, but for now, I just want every VA member to be able to use mIRC! See you in #VA!
